What Are Hemp Pellets for Horses and How Do They Work?

Hemp Pellets

Not every hemp pellet is the same. The ingredients, cannabinoid content, intended use, and feeding directions can vary considerably between products.

That is why horse owners should look beyond the word “hemp” and understand exactly what is in the product they are feeding.

How Do Hemp Pellets for Horses Work?

The simplest answer is that hemp pellets provide their ingredients in a convenient, consistent form that can be included in a horse’s regular feeding program. How they work depends on the particular formulation.

1. They Deliver Their Ingredients in an Easy-to-Feed Form

Pelleting allows measured ingredients to be combined into a form that can be fed consistently. Instead of dealing with oils, powders, or multiple separate products, horse owners can generally add the recommended amount of pellets to the horse’s regular feed.

2. Different Hemp Formulas Are Designed for Different Wellness Goals

Hemp-based equine products are not necessarily one-size-fits-all. For example, Mr. Yoder’s currently offers hemp-derived formulations positioned for several different needs, including:

“Hemp-derived does not automatically mean CBD-containing.”

What Research Actually Shows

A 56-day study involving CBD-containing pellets found no significant difference in sedation or ataxia between supplemented and control horses, and reported no adverse clinical effects during the study period.2 That’s encouraging safety information under the conditions studied — but it does not prove that hemp or CBD treats a particular disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hemp pellets and CBD pellets the same?

No. Hemp refers to the plant source, while CBD is a specific cannabinoid. A hemp-derived product should not automatically be assumed to contain CBD — or to be CBD-free. Check the product’s formulation and label.

Not necessarily. In one controlled 56-day study, horses receiving CBD-containing pellets did not show a significant increase in sedation or ataxia compared with control horses.

Do not assume they are. If a product contains CBD or other prohibited cannabinoids, it can create problems under equestrian competition rules. Check the current rules of your governing organization before use.
